Beginnings, continuations, and creativity (1)

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)

There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)

And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
George Aber after Ecclesiastes

Piers and I are lucky to have two houses with small gardens that need developing.  One belongs to our recently bought  Tudor cottage in a pretty Dorset village, the other is in northern Burgundy, close to Chablis.  This blog follows the process of bringing these two gardens into a new phase of their lives.  As I work, I ask myself questions, consider what a garden means to the gardener or the onlooker, find ways of making the garden work in its context.

Chablis

The cottage in Dorset has a small walled garden which has been much loved in the past, but neglected recently.  During the gestation period between choosing to buy this property and owning it, my imagination has been working.  The garden is a place waiting to be brought to life and it's me that's going to do the bringing.  I feel inspired, I feel a great weight of responsibility to do it right, and my head is filled with questions.

A time to plant...

As the frost begins to thaw and the snowdrops appear...

During 2013, I'll publish a blog about developing two contrasting walled gardens, one in Cerne Abbas, Dorset, UK, the other in Vermenton, near Chablis, France.

An important part of the project will be to share the emotional and spiritual side of gardening...
